Hey, didn’t you guys used to be called GAMIS? What is Glasgow Artists’ Moving Image Studios?
No two moving image artists take the same approach to their practice. We have worked with artists who have directed movement to camera, place responsive sonic performances, 16mm and archival editing practices. Moving image may be part of a broader practice incorporating light, sound or spatial design. As many artists who work with film arrive at a moving image practice via art school, rather than traditional film school routes, the conventions of filmmaking are often either out of the window or simply not known to that practitioner. This is what we find most exciting about artists’ moving image, we have dedicated Offline to supporting this diversity of practice.
Unlike traditional media; printmaking, painting, sculpture, where there is a long established history of medium-specific studios and facilities, there are few examples of studios dedicated to artists’ moving image and certainly none in Scotland. We are asking what it could mean to bring a community of makers together. What could a studio dedicated to artists’ moving image achieve? What resources and knowledge could be shared? How can we foster a community of practitioners within Glasgow?
We have run pilot projects or options appraisals at two different locations in Govanhill with varying degrees of success. Finding an appropriate property that is both affordable and in a suitable location have proved tricky so far but we remain dedicated to one day delivering Glasgow Artists’ Moving Image Studios (our previous pseudonym).
